Paul Williams, ACII, has spent 30 years in the insurance sector and has led some of the U.K.’s largest insurance businesses and is the CEO of successful insurtech Ripe Thinking.

His career has spanned all aspects of underwriting, MGAs, insurance distribution and digital insurance. Starting as an underwriter at Royal Insurance in 1989, Williams is a qualified Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) and a chartered insurance broker.

In 2002, Williams became managing director for Hill House Hammond Business (part of Aviva) and led the sale of the business to Towergate, Europe’s largest independently owned insurance intermediary. During his decade with Towergate, Williams ran the P&L of many of its broking and MGA operations, ultimately sitting on its retail executive committee with responsibility for £1 billion of premiums.

Williams was headhunted to join Brightside Group, a top 20 U.K. digital insurance intermediary, in 2014 as group CEO and led the £127 million sale of the business to private equity the following year. He went on to become managing director of Thistle Insurance Services, which was JLT Group’s digital and MGA business in the U.K., before taking the helm at Ripe Thinking.

Wiliams’ knowledge of underwriting, specialist sectors, digital technologies and data have been instrumental in accelerating the growth of Ripe Thinking, which is one of the U.K.’s largest specialist insurtech companies. It creates ultra-targeted insurance products, and Williams has supported the deployment of its data analytics and robotics technology.

He is currently running a partnership with the University of Salford, working with data scientists on AI and machine learning for the insurance sector.
