Nechelle S. Nesmith, MD is a medical utilization specialist with Chesapeake Employers’ Insurance.
Dr. Nesmith’s responsibilities include: reviewing pharmacy brand prescriptions with conversion to an equivalent generic medication, provider outreach for consideration of therapeutically beneficial alternative medications and supporting the pharmacy program as a resource to Health Services, performing bill review to address medical necessity and frequency of urine drug screens. She is also closely involved with the medical staff, including another physician in managing treatment for catastrophic claims. Dr. Nesmith also incorporates reviews and evaluations of the appropriateness of requested surgeries and medical treatments prescribed to Chesapeake Employers’ claimants in her daily work. She is also a proud presenter on behalf of the Health Services department for Chesapeake at policyholder seminars.
Prior to joining the Chesapeake team in 2016, Dr. Nesmith obtained postgraduate medical training through a general surgery residency program at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, earning the Junior Clinician of the Year award after the first postgraduate year, followed by travel as a team lead to other physicians, nurses and medical staff for a comprehensive health and wellness company Summit Health with a nationwide network based in Novi, MI. Dr. Nesmith also traveled extensively for Summit Health, presenting informative health education seminars to employees on a variety of medical topics encompassing relevant health, wellness and prevention topics.
Dr. Nesmith earned a doctorate of medicine degree from Howard University in Washington, DC. in 2009 and a bachelor of science in molecular and microbiology from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL, in 2004, graduating as a distinguished lead scholar and receiving the Heart of UCF award.
Dr. Nesmith recently earned the certified Workers’ Compensation Program (WCP) designation through AMCOMP, The American Society of Workers’ Compensation Professionals, which is dedicated to raising the bar for professional and educational excellence in the field of workers’ compensation. She is also a distinguished Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient.
