Michael Shields

Mike Shields is a member of EY’s New York financial services office insurance tax practice, with responsibility for a variety of insurance companies in New York, Pennsylvania, Bermuda, Europe and other jurisdictions. He has 25 years of tax consulting experience, 20 of which have been spent serving insurance tax clients.

Shields is a partner and the global tax leader for AXIS Specialty. Shields is the leader of EY’s mergers and acquisitions practice within tax. He has extensive experience in a wide variety of tax-related issues affecting (re)insurance companies, with a special emphasis on international tax matters, mergers and acquisitions and on aligning tax strategy with corporate strategic initiatives. Shields is also the originator of and leader of EY’s international insurance tax practice, coordinating the efforts of multiple insurance tax professionals on a global basis.

Shields is a former adjunct professor of merger and acquisition tax issues at Temple University’s graduate business school and is a frequent speaker on insurance tax matters. Shields is a frequent speaker at various insurance industry functions, such as Michael Conn seminars and Ernst & Young’s annual insurance industry updates. He has a master of taxation degree from San Diego State University and is a certified public accountant and a fellow of the Life Management Institute.
