Klayton Southwood

Klayton Southwood is a director at Towers Watson. As part of his 24 years of consulting experience, he was previously a principal and consultant with EPIC Consulting. He has experience in both personal and commercial lines, with emphasis on private passenger auto, commercial auto and homeowners insurance. His areas of expertise include:
• Competitive market analysis
• Development of new rating plans based on predictive modeling techniques
• Rate level analysis
• Preparation of rate filings
• Loss reserve analysis
• Litigation support
His reserving experience includes work for insurance companies, municipal risk management agencies and self-insured entities. He also has experience with managing the actuarial aspects of financial examinations for several insurance departments. His experience in the area of expert testimony preparation includes work for state rating bureaus, assigned risk plans and law firms.
Klayton has co-written the reports detailing the results of Towers Watson’s annual survey on the use of predictive modeling techniques in property/casualty insurance in North America since the inception of the survey. He has written several articles on topics related to predictive modeling and competitive market analysis for Towers Watson publications.
Role at Towers Watson
Klayton currently leads Towers Watson’s property/casualty competitive market analysis practice in the U.S.
Klayton is also co-leader of Towers Watson’s Point of View intellectual capital efforts related to homeowners insurance in the U.S. In this role, he is responsible for monitoring financial results and important trends in homeowners in areas such as underwriting and pricing sophistication.
Education and Credentials
Klayton is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a member of the Midwestern Actuarial Forum. He is past chair of the Casualty Actuarial Society Ratemaking Seminar Committee and currently serves as chair of the Professional Education Policy Committee and as a liaison to the Education Policy Committee. He is a past president of the Central Illinois Actuarial Club. He is also a frequent speaker at Casualty Actuarial Society seminars.
Klayton holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics, summa cum laude, from Illinois State University.
